Goal Setting for the New Year

The end of the year is a time to revel in the accomplishments of the past 12 months, and plan for the future. Although many people personally plan in terms of a “New Year’s Resolution” to start exercising, eat healthier, etc. professional goal setting for the new year is also important. As a small business, or self-employed professional, goal setting and taking stock of the previous year will help you stay focused on the future.

Reflect

Ask yourself what did and didn't work for you over the course of the last year. If something was working well for you, then you're going to want to set a goal to continue to do what's working. If something wasn't working as expected, decide whether you need to make modifications with a strategy or come up with an approach that's entirely different. Assessment is integral to setting goals for success in the coming year.

Set Goals

Decide in what areas you want to improve. Do you want to attract more clients, receive repeat business and/or referrals from current and past clients? Do you want to add a new service to your existing offering? Have you been bogged down in administrative tasks? Do you need to delegate tasks or hire a new employee?

How Will You Get There?

Take each professional goal that you set for yourself and break it down into smaller, achievable steps or tasks. If you are in a shared office space or coworking environment, perhaps you can network and leverage the collaboration opportunities that are available to help you meet your goals.

Measure Progress

Keep your goals somewhere that is easy to see as a reminder to yourself of what you set out to achieve. Measure your progress throughout the year. If you have that one specific goal that keeps dropping to the bottom of your list, perhaps it is not quite as important-or you need to pivot and prioritize it higher. Move on with flexibility; be willing to adjust as you progress throughout the year.

Setting professional goals is key to success, and there is no better time than at the birth of a New Year to get yourself organized. By setting goals, outlining steps, and evaluating throughout the year, the new year could be one of exceptional growth for you and your business.
